Episode 104: Give Yourself Room to Breathe

Everyday happiness is perhaps the most important and meaningful kind. I want to see it all, to feel it all, to gather it all to me and hold it close, forever.

Dark chocolate with bits of toffee and sea salt.

Reading the biography of your favorite musician.

Knowing better, and doing better.

The sound of the air conditioning running on a very hot day.

Picking out a nailpolish color from the nail salon wall, every color you can think of on display.

When you finally get ahead a little bit, give yourself room to breathe a little easier.

How clean your skin feels after a shower, how soft and warm.

Buying a birthday present for someone you know really well.

Trying to draw an ampersand from memory.

When they casually reach over and place their hand on your knee, and you are so glad they did.

Yellow gold tee-shirts paired with bright blue pants.

A cat you see outside on an apartment balcony every day, it meows to you in greeting every time.

Hearing an unusual voice out in the world, something exceptionally different and gorgeous.

The silent oasis of your own hotel room after a long day exploring a new place.

A gas burner clicking before it finally catches and you can put the kettle on for tea.

Licking the envelope, placing the stamp on, and pushing the letter into the mailbox.

A new book by a favorite writer,

Wandering the zoo after hours, the animals relieved that everyone’s gone, coming out of hiding, surprised to see you too.

A tray of colored macarons, perfect little circles of sweetness and delight.

Stepping outside of the airport into the blistering sun, you hear a horn and there they are to pick you up, just as they said they’d be.
