Episode 62: The Simple Joys of Childhood

Childhood joys, the beauty of a simple life free from worry or distraction. Going to school, playing with friends, staying up late reading, visiting your grandparents -- there's a lot of memories and joy that made us who we are.

Building a pillow fort out of couch cushions and blankets, hiding out in there for the rest of the day.

Getting new shoes with lights on the bottom, they help you run faster, you can definitely tell.

Running through the sprinklers with your best friends.

A big bowl of cereal, ice cold milk and a big silver spoon.

Your very favorite cartoons for hours on a Sunday morning.

Getting good grades on your report card, how proud your parents feel.

Playing on the playground, climbing on the monkey bars, running in the sand.

Pumping your legs hard when swinging on the swings, going just a little too high, but still coming down safe.

Hearing the sound of the ice cream truck coming down the street on the hottest day of summer.

Learning how to swim in the community pool, that pool smell clinging to you the rest of the day.

Riding your bike to the end of the cul de sac, pedaling in big, lazy loops around the neighborhood.

Staying up way too late reading books in your bed, a night light illuminating just the pages of your book.

Visiting a water park and throwing yourself down the second tallest waterslide.

Taking a nap after lunch, curling up into a little warm ball.

How different the world looks when you’re looking up at everyone else.

Watching TV all day after you feel too sick to go to school, the hours drifting by slowly.

Birthday parties every month -- from trampoline parties to bowling to hanging out in the backyard.

Your mom making you a snack before dinner, peanut butter on celery with raisins stuck in.

Not having any homework for your classes.

Sliding down the stairs, over and over, climbing back up and doing it all over again.

Getting to play with your cousins over the holidays.

Spending the night at grandma and grandpa’s house, the yummy meal, the warmth and peace surrounding you.

The promise you made to yourself that you’d never forget what it felt like to be young.
